I've read this book 3-4 times at this point. With each reading, I find a piece of advice to pull from that feels extremely poignant to what is currently going on in my life.Irv Yalom is one of my therapy heros. While I've never met him, I find myself pulling from his advice in many different circumstances. Unlike many psychiatrists, Yalom does not pathologize. He seems to treat people like people and encourage future therapists to do so as well. As a therapist myself, when I am feeling lost, I often think "what would Yalom say about this?"
I think we are in a time where despite immense progress, going to therapy is still stigmatized (even in the field). I appreciate how Yalom speaks openly about the importance of his own therapy on his progression to becoming a better therapist. I think that this book is important for anyone to read but especially for those who want to understand why therapy is so important and how healing it can be.

The Gift of Therapy An Open Letter to a New Generation of Therapists and Their Patients Irvin Yalom 9780060938116 Books Reviews
Irvin Yalom is a prolific author, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Stanford University, and at the time of writing this book had over 35 years of clinical practice.
His book is essentially 85 tips for professional counselors on how to get the most out of therapy. Each tip is a chapter so you get a tip and then an explanation of the tip. Although the book is designed for professional counselors, non-professional counselors and even clients of counselors can benefit from giving this little book a read.
Some of the tips to counselors include
Let the patient matter to you
Do home visits
Acknowledge your errors
Create a new therapy for each patient
Give yourself time between patients
Yalom's writing style is personal and engaging. His sense of humor shines through his writing and each chapter is written in a no-nonsense, down-to-earth fashion. In this little book I have found a tome in which I will return to again and again.
While the title is The Gift of Therapy, in reality it is Yalom's gift to therapy.
Highly Recommended
Yalom writes this book in a way that is easy to read and keeps you interested. Good read for any therapist, but especially has been helpful for someone just starting in the field.
Simply one of the best books on therapy you can own, from a therapist's perspective or a client's. It provides such wonderful insight for a neophyte on many difficult subjects and general questions alike. I read it at least once a year as a psychotherapist to remind myself of what we are all capable of in this field and how the relationship and empathy should always be at the forefront of my mind.
This was required reading for a psychotherapy class that I took, but I would have enjoyed reading it either way. The chapters were short, the language was easy, and the writing felt very intimate. I found it infinitely interesting to hear about the experiences of someone who has practiced psychotherapy for so long, there were many things I would have never even considered - either as patient or therapist. This is definitely a book I plan to keep near by throughout the remainder of my coursework and hopefully into my own practice.
If you are a therapist, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. In fact, I believe it should be required reading for all counselors. There are also a host of very valuable lessons for those who are seeking therapy or are interested in self-exploration in general.
So, he gives advice. At his age he deserves to give something more than he has to the profession that is so much a part of one's identity. So my advice? Get it and read it, if you are a therapist or plan to be one; take it one chapter at a time if you are a client or patient - use it on your journey; humble yourself to try something new, again, better, different, old school, if you are a therapist and don't have time for anything but earning your CEU's. Take your time! Be in the here and now when you read it! Breathe deep breaths. Notice your responses to the gifts he has given and to what he has received and ask if you are giving and receiving, both, as well. Soak in Yalom's wisdom; he has written his share, and logs 30+ years of experience. Yalom's ideas are often not his own but he has a nice way of sticking in your mind; they have served me well in my own profession and journey; but ignore - even scoff - at his arrogance. All of his writing has that edge and there's so much more to focus on here.
I am an old psychiatrist. I have been doing psychotherapy for 40 years.
I treat anxiety and depression and often see couples struggling with
the complexity of living together.
This book is illuminating. It is exciting and refreshing. He touches on the most
important points in developing the skill to help people change.
He is a gifted writer and has provided a wonderful gift for anyone interested
in learning about what goes on in therapy. Or what should go on between two people
working together to help heal.
I recommend it highly to seasoned therapists who what to be reminded of what is the
essence of what should occur.
This is remarkable writing and vital information
